Adam's take on libertarianism

Adam at My Side of the Couch writes a post about libertarianism where he very nicely lends me support on the issue of being a libertarian and working for the government.

He has an interesting comment about libertarianism and the "War on Terror":

I started this post mainly because I consider myself Republican with libertarian leanings. I was full-on Libertarian until the party went all moonbatty on the War on Terror. This is one area I disagree with the Libertarian Party. I want terrorists crushed, and I want governments supporting them crushed.

I agree with him if he is talking about our invasion of Iraq. Our government's job is to protect us from enemies, and Saddam Hussein's Iraq was an enemy. George Bush should be given credit for going in there and successfully defeating the Saddam Hussein regime.

Yes, that's part of it. I also want Al Qaeda and anyone supporting them squashed like bugs.

Saddam Hussein was definitely a bad guy, but I don’t think he was much of a threat to the United States.

The people who attacked us on 9/11 where Islamic Fundamentalist terrorists. Saddam Hussein was definitely not an Islamic Fundamentalist. In fact the Islamic Fundamentalist wanted to eliminate Saddam Hussein, but Saddam had brutally repressed the Islamic Fundamentalist the same way he did everyone who opposed him in Iraq. Now that we have eliminated Saddam Hussein, we are fighting to prevent the Islamic Fundamentalist from taking over Iraq.

We can argue about the wisdom of overthrowing Saddam Hussein (I think it was a huge blunder), but that is water over the dam. Having overthrown Saddam Hussein, we have no choice but to the make sure the Islamic Fundamentalists don’t take over Iraq.

This takes the cake as probably the least thoughtful and most wrong comment you've made. There was and is no credible evidence that Saddam Hussein was a threat to our national security.

I've dropped my link to your blog, since you seem hellbent on making Libertarians look like caricatures.

Yours truly,
Mr. X
